Friesland: Our Approach
Becoming, being, and staying a circular frontrunner in Europe
Mission
Our mission is to deliver one of Europe’s most distinctive circular transition agendas. We focus on key regional themes and take tangible steps that make real impact.
Looking ahead, we are working toward a 55% reduction in CO₂ emissions and a 50% reduction in the use of primary raw materials by 2030, in line with national goals. And by 2050, our ambition is clear: Friesland will be fully circular. Together, we are building a powerful transition region — driven by the belief that change starts from within.

Vision

We believe the regional level is where the circular transition can truly accelerate. Local is often too small. National too distant. The region? Just right. With our own regional strategy, especially in the circular economy, we as Friesland and the North can distinguish ourselves nationally and internationally.
As the North, we are small enough that we can easily meet, which promotes the necessary innovation. At the same time we are large enough to set up and further develop major international innovations and developments. We take immediate concrete action and put our money where our mouth is.
DNA
What makes Circulair Friesland unique is how we work: not top-down, but we organise and implement the collective learning process of this transition bottom-up. Not in isolation, but together. We know why a Circular Economy is important for Friesland, as an important pillar of the regional Blue Delta strategy aimed at Broad Prosperity.
- We see the Circular Economy not as an ideology, but as a path to ecological, social and financial value
- We know what we want to achieve; together and for ourselves.
- We share openly: knowledge, skills, facilities, contacts
- We challenge and trust each other — with equal voice and shared ambition
- We are driven by the idea that: no one is bigger than the club
